We are so looking forward to this day excursion & it’s NOT TO BE MISSED, as we travel to West Yorkshire and the market town of HALIFAX rich in economic history -in the 15th century Halifax became the economic hub of the west riding of Yorkshire primarily in woollen manufacture, this once thriving mill town is the largest town in the wider Calderdale borough. Today boasting the stunning sole survivor of the 18th century cloth halls – the PIECE HALL with its Grandiose square, The Charles Barry designed Town Hall, who also designer the houses of Parliament. Halifax Borough Market – this Victorian covered market-place is still very much the hub of this community and bursting at the seams with everything you could possibly need. the Peoples park, chocolate manufactures, the Almshouses, Prescott street drill hall completed in 1870 can all be found here plus, the magnificent SHIBDEN HALL set in the Shibden valley which today will be our second port of call, and featured in the BBC drama Gentleman Jack.
Dating back to 1420 and surrounded by beautifully restored gardens forming the estate of Shibden park. – cafe, visitors facilities, miniature railway, boating lake, walking trails, play area and endless stunning woodlands. Visitors are offered a fascinating journey through the lives of the families who lived here, including the noted diarist ANNE LISTER (1791-1840). Explore The 17th century barn & workshops housing a carriage collection, displays relating to blacksmiths, coopers, wheelwrights, saddlers, the folk museum plus the stunning architecture with its mix of styles.
